EDU Questions

Questions that came in after advisement today.

A lot of people had the same questions, please share the answers with your students.

1. What happens to past SOE hours? Are they converted to EDUs? How do I know what I presently have?
Past SOE hours will he be converted into EDUs. We have not figured out the formula yet, we will be working on it soon; suggestions have been anywhere from 60 to 100 hours equals 1 EDU, let us know what you think.

2. Will programs like Evolutions count? If so, how will they converge to EDUs?
Programs that currently counted for SOE will continue to count towards EDUs, probably using the conversion stated above once we figured out.

3. There seems to be a difference in some of the programs in terms of how often you have to go to earn an EDU. Example, 1 EDU as officer on fishing versus 1 EDU per year in chanteens versus 2.5 EDUs for a week available only to seniors.
Yes there's a difference in program offerings of EDUs, a topic for discussion at the next appendix D meeting.

4. Some students think they can earn all for EDUs in one year.
That is correct, the working group saw that coming. But thought a student that was that active would continue to be active. It does raise the question, if a student does no afterschool Aqua/Ag programs for three years does he/she show “interest” in the program?

5. Do work hours count as EDUs?
Again we are not changing any of the current methods of earning hours, if they have an approved placement the hours will still count, probably using the conversion that we come up with for SOE hours to EDU.

6. How about clubs or homework center?
If you were able to earn SOE's in the past from a club they still qualify. Students do not earn SOE's currently from homework center.

7. Who decides competent?
Each program determines their own outcomes and competencies.

8. Do we still have community service?
Yes, same community service as before.

9. Evolutions programs, Peabody Museum and other general outside programs will count.
We have not changed what counted or didn't count towards SOEs now EDUs.

  1. What about doing some after school Computer trainings for EDU’s, or some of the Career Cruising/Portfolio Development work that we’ve been discussing in the Student Success Plans working group? One of our biggest hurdles for how to fill both of those needs was where to get the time.

Could we require kids to get an EDU in each of those areas? Or test out of the Computer User one by proving their competency? If we required the appropriate Career Cruising/Portfolio Development/Life Planning one every year, that would take care of them always needing to do one each year. . .

This is a great idea. It’s an opportunity to make sure that we are meeting the career/college planning needs of our students which really is an integral part of a vocational curriculum. Perhaps we could require .25 EDU per year in this area so we can be sure that students are keeping up with their portfolio development throughout their careers here.

If a student has gotten ahead of the EDU requirements with the Aqua/Agriculture activities offered in the hand-out yesterday, why not allow them the option to pursue the equivalent in SOE hours (75) with another approved activity for their yearly requirement if requested?
Example Scenario: A student told me that he has afterschool Band which he wants to pursue. Let’s say in the previous year, he received 2 EDUs (in Agricultural Science and Technology Program and Assistant to the Waterfront Safety Officer). He has locked in 2 legitimate EDU’s, so he is now free to pursue 75 SOE hours with his choice activity (must be approved still) for the coming year. However, he must pursue something each year regardless. Thus, if he does not have band or another activity in a particular year, then he or she will go for another EDU (from the Aqua/Agriculture Activities offered in the hand-out) to fulfill the yearly requirement.

OK, so that student is ahead 1 EDU, and thus on track according to our EDU tracking requirements, but will that student's sending district feel that paying for the student to continue at Sound (when he/she can take band at their sending district's school) is worth the taxpayers' money? In this current fiscal climate? Or will they take the opinion that the student benefitted well from that tuition LAST year, maybe even got EXTRA benefit last year, but no longer needs to suck up that extra money continuing at Sound?
I think that we need to show that the student is effectively using their sending district's money EACH and EVERY year in doing things that they can do only here, or else they may be pulled from our program. Sending districts are already (Trish, please correct me if I'm wrong) looking for excuses to either pull students currently attending Sound and/or discontinue their relationships with us as sending districts.
